Developing a Technologically Advanced Nation
The Singaporean government recently launched an updated National AI Strategy 2.0, demonstrating their commitment to embracing innovation and addressing challenges related to artificial intelligence (AI). The new strategy focuses on three main areas of society: activity drivers, people and communities, and infrastructure and environment.
Nurturing a Knowledge-Driven Country
An important aspect of Singapore’s AI strategy is the establishment of AI Centers of Excellence within companies across the nation. These centers will facilitate advanced AI value creation and utilization in key industries. To enhance AI proficiency in the public sector, the government aims to equip public officers with specialized knowledge, technical skills, and regulatory tools.
Singapore’s plan includes utilizing its government capacity to develop resources that support AI adoption within the public sector. Furthermore, the government intends to increase the number of AI practitioners in the country to 15,000 by scaling up AI-specific training programs and strengthening both local and global talent pipelines. So far, these initiatives have placed over 2,700 individuals in promising positions within the AI industry.
Expanding Computing Capabilities
In line with global trends, Singapore is working towards enhancing its computing capacity. To achieve this, the government is fostering partnerships with major industry players such as chipmakers and cloud service providers, as well as supporting local firms in the compute industry.
With a timeline of 3-5 years for implementing these action steps, Singapore is actively positioning itself as a leader in the global AI sector. Other countries, such as the United Kingdom, have also announced ambitious plans to invest in AI supercomputers. AI development organizations such as OpenAI are expanding their reach into various regions like the Middle East, while countries like the United States are regulating technology exports related to high-level AI systems development to maintain a competitive edge.
The National AI Strategy 2.0 illustrates Singapore’s dedication to using AI technology in various aspects of its society and economy, ensuring excellence, innovation, and collaboration among people and organizations.
